This Steam Locomotive Started and Ended Each Day Like This!
Author: LoggerHogger

In the age of steam logging railroads as the cutting areas moved farther from the mills the lumber companies built camps in the woods to house the loggers closer to their chores. However, with the speed of highball logging even those camps soon became remote from the cutting areas. This required yet another innovation by the loggers.

We see in this photo the answer to this situation used by the Pacific Lumber Co. of Scotia, California. Parked in the middle of Yager Creek Camp in the 1940's we see TPL ALCO 2-8-2T #37 and her short string of former interurban coaches. These cars were used each morning and afternoon to haul the loggers out of camp and to their cutting area and then home again that day. This was a logger commuter train of sorts.

During the day, #37 and her crew would haul the empty log cars to the landing and the loads back to camp. When the day was winding down she would return to the landing with these coaches to retrieve the loggers and then head back to camp where a hot shower and good size logger meal was waiting.

As usual a fascinating story of days long ago and far away (for me).
Love your posts.

Just when I think you have topped it all . . you surpass my expectations! A classic (and very rare) photo with the usual fine backstory.
