Steam & Excursion > 844 From Cheyenne to Rock Springs.Date: 04/20/17 17:52 844 From Cheyenne to Rock Springs. Author: tehachcond As most of us know, UP 844 departed Cheyenne on April 18 for a trip to Boise, Idaho. Here's three shots:
1. The steam crew doing their "job briefing" at the Cheyenne steam shop before departing. 2. The dispatcher did us all a favor by routing the train "over the top" on the old line, rather than the usual route via the #3 track, the route westbounds usually go. 844 sounds nice going through Granite. 3. A westbound UPS train roars by 844 during the service stop at Hanna. Three more in another post. Thanks for looking. Author: tehachcond Not sure about the service stop. 844 was held to let that Z train by, and then they pulled up to where a large group of school kids was waiting. Maybe the crew took advantage of the delay to make an unplanned service stop.

Author: Odyssey The turnout in Hanna was impressive given the size of the "community" ... here's a shot of the 844 arriving after a 45 minute delay waiting for E and W bound Z-trains to pass ... the kids and the populace were all enthusiastic ... think about it, both the current generation of "kids" and their parents and even their grand parents may have never seen a steam engine ... this is 2017 and when did the steamers last roll frequently????? ... UP is trying to make points both with safety around rails, and with the heritage that is endangered of being lost ...
