Some At The Ready And Some Under Repairs At This Facility!
Author: LoggerHogger

The Bayshore roundhouse in South San Francisco was a busy place in the late 1940's as we see in this fine L.L. Bonney photo.

Here we see SP #3611 standing by SP #4114 and #4366. The Bayshore crews were keeping busy repairing #4366 wile at the same time assuring that cab-forward #4114 would be ready along with #3611.

Busy times these were indeed.

My father often spoke of Bayshore's "heyday" as being during and after WW2. There were so few machinists available during the war, that the work went on non-stop until 1946 or '48 or so, before they actually caught up. Photos we have at SFT show a Bayshore that looked, in those days, like they might never finish all the work!

The 4114 is probably just in for routine servicing, as it would barely fit the turntable. It would have never made it into the backshop. The 4366, on the other hand, sure looks like it's headed there. During and after the war, they used to disassemble them in the roundhouse before being towed/pushed onto the backshop transfer table. I'm betting that's the 4366's tender next to her... maybe... The 3611 would fit the transfer table, but I can only guess as to why it, or any of them, for that matter, were actually there that day. There's an article from the SF Examiner from 1953 about Bayshore's shops, with pics of a 2-10-2 getting raised off her wheels in the backshops. Even though Bayshore was really set up for smaller locomotives, 2-8-0's, ten wheelers, etc., they could and did handle larger steam engines.

Thanks, Martin. Another great photo from your vast collection!

Women worked in the Mojave engine house during the war, as they did at many other locations....

Bayshore, too. A lady named Elisabeth Barnes ran the steam hammer in the blacksmith shop during the war - I have a pic, but need to convert it - she made the cover of an SP Bulletin in 1942. We have shots of several women working in the car shops, although their names seem to be lost to history...

Albina too! They had quite a few women working there up into the 70's! One was named Mary Brandt and everybody referred to her as "Roundhouse Mary"! Another lady was named Nellie Ferguson. They used to sing that old ditty..."Run for the roundhouse Nellie! He can't corner you there!"
