Teachers Stephanie and Katie (right) met UP 844 with their Rock River school kids @ Medicine Bow, Wyoming, April 28, 2017. The wind & snow didn't bother these kids!

What a great picture. It is so gratifying to see our Teachers taking their students to see some history of railroading. It teaches them the importance of knowing some of the history of what makes our country. Thank you to the Teachers.

On one of my chases in the mid eighties I got ahead of the 844 going east into Lexington, NE. At the city park next to the tracks the school kids had assembled to watch the train go through town. They were singing songs when the whistle caught their attention. Seconds later the locomotive burst out from behind some parked grain cars doing around 65 miles per hour. As fast as it appeared, it was gone. There was a moment of stunned silence amomg the group, then they started cheering as if the Huskers had scored a touchdown. It was awesome.

Nice too see the kids learn that Steam engines aren't just a cartoon character!...Plus always neat to see the little kids next to the big engine!

That should be on the UP calendar. The history now is that it is so rare to see a water powered train.
