Steam & Excursion > In A Few Places Like This Steam Held Out Longer Than Most!Date: 05/22/17 04:42 In A Few Places Like This Steam Held Out Longer Than Most! Author: LoggerHogger By the late 1950's most logging railroads in the U.S. had either converted to diesel power or simply been abandoned all together in favor of trucks. Fortunately there were just a few hold-outs that relied on steam for the daily chores of log hauling a while longer.
On Vancouver Island the Comox Logging & Rilway Company continued to use steam motive power on it's log trains through the 1960's and even into the early 1970's. In this view we see CL&R Baldwin 2-8-2 #11 and her train of log flats headed out of Ladysmith and bound for the woods for another load of logs. All good things do come to and end and by the early 1970's #11 and her other stablemates were finally replaced by a diesel. Today #11 is on display at the old Comox shops in Ladysmith waiting for her crew to return and take once again back to the woods. Martin Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 05/22/17 04:44 by LoggerHogger. Author: africansteam I don't know how long the other Comox steam power was in service but No. 11 was initially placed on display in Ladysmith, BC in 1962.
