Union Pacific's Steam Shop and Roundhouse Tour
Author: FrontRangeTrains

Yesterday, my girlfriend, my youngest, and I attended Cheyenne Depot Days in Cheyenne, Wyoming. A public tour of both the steam locomotive shops and roundhouse stalls was offered. Members of the steam team were there displaying the equipment and answering any questions the general public had. Here's the list of equipment that was seen yesterday during the tour:

Steam Locomotive Shop:
UP FEF-3 No. 844
UP "Big Boy" No. 4014

Roundhouse Stalls:
UP "Centennial" DDA40X No. 6936
UP E9A's Nos. 951 and 949
UP "Challenger" No. 3985
UP 2-10-2 No. 5511
UP FEF-3 No. 838

There's more...

Suddenly with the successful operation of the 844, much the negativity against the current steam crew seems to have gone away. Or should I still stock up on popcorn for later?

If you had full access to unlimited budget, manpower,
and contractors (something NEVER allowed before in the
history), you could make ultra-expensive mistakes and
be lauded for them, too.

Is the 5511 operable? It would be interesting to see a 2-10-2 in operation.

Now that's just mean! 35 mph is plenty fast when you're trying to chase the thing on foot!

Out

Still would be fun to watch 5511 with a train going up a hill

Hardly successful..... The drivers came back round so I guess that's a success.... The blow down system hasn't changed and I doubt the water treatment has changed. It took a few years for the 844's boiler to fill to the brim with mud and scale. Don't stop stocking up on popcorn and drinking the cool aide that can be found just yet.

I have to agree, with no proper maintenance the results always show up, just give it time!

think they are sampling the wATER AT EACH LOCATION, AND whatever it is must be super strong, the ratio is enormous.

If you are referring to the boiler water supply, then all the sampling in the world will NOT account for PROPER use of PROPER treatment chemicals, along with frequent blowdowns and effective boiler washes. And I don't mean that "Terlyn" crap!

Testing the water prior to using it is new?
