Great stuff. Trying to get away from diesels though. Lol

Are those old locomotives going to be returned to service one day or are they a parts source?

I wonder why the hopper car on track 3 is upside down?

All the steam locomotives but one are in service. #492 is not in service.

A real blight on area. They should clean out a lot of the junk instead of leaving it there to rot

In Chama, the engines not in service are #483, #492 and #497 and all need extensive boiler/running gear work if they were to return to service, which is very unlikely. In Roger's pictures only out-of-service #492 is shown. I believe #497 is stored in one of the two remaining roundhouse stalls and #483 has been moved for preservation/cosmetic restoration by the Friends.

It's a standard gauge car. I never saw this one used, but at one time they tried using standard gauge hoppers for hauling ballast. Adapted them to narrow gauge trucks like the EBT did for a time. The original wood drop bottom cars will handle cinder ballast just fine, but not rock ballast. There was another car or two that looked like the cars on the Erie Mining. Eventually EBT hoppers were acquired.

It has been cleaned out, but I guess its been over 15 years ago since we did it. What is there is organized fairly well. When we restored the short caboose, we found many usable parts in there for it. True, there is stuff in there you'd think nobody would ever use, but if you did throw it out, it is gone for good. Note that the obvious trash does get hauled off, but at this time of the year, there are more important things to do to keep everyone busy.

Fortunately the area is not normally viable by visitors to the railroad.

Sorry, but I must need new glasses as I did not see any million dollar homes or glass walled corporate buildings in the area.

It is not in site of the average visitor. A lot of what you see will be used for parts after being rebuilt.

Bayview-boy would be the most dangerous person to have around a heritage railroad. Everyone of those parts of scrap or castings maybe just the part you need to rebuild a car or engine. Who would be the experienced person to decide which part will never be needed or used? Every part there was part of the original operating railroad and should be retained. That junk pile is the most valuable part of Chama, and everyone who volunteered there were benefited in one way or another from searching that collection. It would be nice to have a old barn with shelves and bins and every part put in a numbered spot but that will not happen. The day some idiot tries to scrap that collection is the day of the beginning of the end of the C&TS. Leave it alone, and don't look at it, until you need to search for that one special casting to fit your car or project.

It is sad to read that someone already threw stuff away. That swamp dates back many years and may have had parts from link and pin days and even class 56 parts. Would anyone today recognize a link or even a Janney Knuckle? I know a railroad where the scrap pile included a coupler knuckle that was a Janney and the owner said he was going to save it for the museum. Then the land owner requested a immediate removal of the railroad off the property and that whole scrap pile most likely went to scrap, including the rare Janney knuckle. And I read on this site of someone in great need for a Janney coupler knuckle. The person who thinks they know the value and usefulness of every scrap casting and part in making a cleanup attempt has a swelled head of bull S...! See what it cost to have just one casting copied and reproduced and you will learn the value of scrap piles.

I don't think the swamp is going to change any time soon.

I for one am glad that such amalgamations of "parts" still exist in these legendary places; and Roger, my dad had that album when I was a kid, had much of the music from the "spaghetti westerns" of Clint Eastwood, haven't heard that music in probably fifty years.

Many times I am sure to open your videos both to see the video work but also to hear your great choices of music!

Keep the Faith!
