Santa Fe 4-8-4 in Modesto (CA) to be moved.
Author: lynnpowell

The City of Modesto and Pacific Gas & Electric Co. have reached and agreement to move Santa Fe 4-8-4 #2921 from Beard Brook Park in South Modesto to the Amtrak station in East Modesto. The huge 4-8-4 was placed on display in 1960, apparently on top of a PG&E gas line that now needs maintenance. PG&E will handle the logistics of the move of the locomotive and tender, which will be via truck, a VERY LARGE truck! No date has been set for the approximately eight mile move, but they say that it will occur at night. A display track will have to be built by the Amtrak prior to the move.

Good. That park has been a horrible location for too many years. Although I'm not quite sure the downtown Modesto area is much better.

UnitAlarm, its being moved to the current Amtrak station, which on the BNSF mainline. The area is pretty decent, plus Lynn live close by and can keep an eye on the loco. Will give the passengers something to look at while waiting for there tardy trains.

THe Amtrak Modesto CA train station is located in FAR east and suburban Modesto CA.
This Amtrak station is on the former ATSF Valley Division mainline (northern San Joaquin Valley, California) .
It should hopefully be a rather safe location for this large steam locomotive.
This location is NOT the downtown Modesto area where the former SP Modesto Depot is.

Here is a Map of the location of the Amtrak Modesto CA depot on the BNSF , former ATSF mainline.

The post clearly said EAST Modesto, nothing about downtown.

Getting it away from any more potential flood waters and the residents of the park has to be a good thing. Maybe they can even slap a coat of paint on it once it is a little more prominently displayed by the Amtrak station. One can hope right?

I recall way back when, there was an effort to move the engine to the Western American Railroad Museum in Barstow.
I recall the engine got badly flooded a number of years ago as well.....

Millions, but then where would it operate? Think AT&SF 3751.

Where is exact new planned site at Amtrak Station? Here is my dad by 2921 on the 80's. Here is a wet pic by Ted Benson in Railfan. 2921 is by trees in center of the present location image.

The proposed new site might be better named as Empire, since it is a little north of that old Santa Fe station. But Modesto expanded its city limits, thus the name of a once very rural area. If a cosmetic job is done on this 4-8-4, it will be a greatly improved and far more appropriate location.

Addendum: The WARM report, referenced later in this post, is outstanding. The writer and his co-workers are most impressive.

This article summarizes those efforts quite well.

I believe this is a sister engine to 2926 in Albuquerque, NM...

I agree -- that is an excellent article. I am
pleased that the 2921 will finally be moved out'
of the park and put o display at the Modesto
Amtrak station.

(I wonder exactly what "PG&E will be in charge
of the logistics of the move" means? I hope the
PG&E gets knowledgeable people to do that, and
that she will gets spruced up before she is put on
display, so that all who see her will have every
reason to be impressed and awed by what they see,
and so that she will look like something the BNSF
will have every reason to be proud of as a worthy
and very important part of their corporate history.

Does anyone on this board have any pull with PG&E. We could ask for ten to twenty serviceable poles to be placed around this steam engine along with some PG&E lights to protect it.

I think its cool that she has all Baldwin Disc drivers without a boxpok thrown in.

(Unless driver 1 is and I missed it..) The Baldwin discs look cool though.
