Ed's family rode the C&TSRR Saturday June 10th. The C&TSRR was one of Ed's Favorite places.

Ed was a great friend, a true gentleman, a wonderful singer and a killer guitar picker. All things that I inspire to be.

Highball, Ed.

A very poignant tribute. Thank you for the post.

I presume he is shoveling in bags of sand with the coal. Thought at first that he was going to warm up his lunch.

The bags had Ed's ashes. This was his request.

That certainly is a very special tribute. I didn't in any way mean to make light of what was happening.

Okay, Roger. I LIKE this song. Whats the title and artist? (Sounds like Loretta Lynn but I don't find it online).

Ed, that's Patsy Cline, "Life is Like a Mountain Railroad."

Roger,
Thanks and if I could have been there I would have been on the train with Dan.
We go way back and I first met Dan and his wife in Maui.
I have escorted train tours since 1984 while still working for the airlines.
Hope to finally meet you as I have done the Colorado trip for over 16 years with groups averaging 38-40 people and the Cumbres is number one in 99% of my customers. I usually drive down to Chama and spend 2-3 nights
taking pictures. Use to have breakfast with Dan on these days and spend hours talking about SP, Maui, Roaring Camp, and twice the Cumbres & Toltec.
Thanks again,
Denny Thompson

PS-love your pictures especially those from the air.

Jim and Roger, you're both close. The name is "Life's Railway to Heaven".

From cyberhymal.org: "The origin of this song is murky. Eliza R. Snow may have written the original lyrics, with M. E. Abbey (a Baptist minister in Georgia in the 1890s) supplying the chorus. There is a similar poem/hymn by Snow, called “Truth Reflects upon Our Senses,” which Tillman put to this same tune in 1909. At any rate, Abbey and Tillman copyrighted “Life’s Railway to Heaven” in 1890. It has long been a favorite in the railroading community."

The music was composed by Charles D. Tillman (1861-1943) who began his career as a singing evangelist at the age of 26 and later formed his own music publishing house. The hymn, which is in the public domain, has four verses as seen in the attached picture.

There's also another railway-themed hymn, "Life's Railway", with words and music written in 1922 by Will O. Jones. Also comprised of four verses and a refrain, part of its tune is quite similar to "Life's Railway to Heaven".

"Life's Railway to Heaven" just happens to be still sitting on my piano as I was planning on using it for my wife Alyce's memorial service 4½ weeks ago. As it turned out it didn't happen because the pianist whom our daughter wanted to use for the service can't read music (he plays only by ear) and didn't know the hymn.

I'm hoping that the SP&S 700 will still be running when my ashes are ready to go into a firebox. If not, there's also several logging lokies that I've fired and run that I'd be proud to pass through!

I also had the pleasure of visiting in Dan's home when I was helping Denny escort Rail Travel Center tours. I'm grateful that I had the privilege of knowing him.

While I've heard the name of the singer "Patsy Cline", I don't know her voice. But I find it interesting that the singer here apparently is not familiar with the verb "quail" which is used in the hymn and is much more descriptive of the situation at hand than the word "fail" that she uses instead, as heard at 06:30 in Roger's video.
