Steam & Excursion > A Rare Sot Of This Engine Working During Her First Of 3 Careers!Date: 06/22/17 04:25 A Rare Sot Of This Engine Working During Her First Of 3 Careers! Author: LoggerHogger Few steam locomotives have led longer lives in active service than this one. Even though she was widely photographed in her last two working locations, finding action shots of her working for her original owner is difficult indeed.
Fortunately for us, railfan Harold A. Hill of Seattle, Washington ventured down to Silverton, Oregon with his camera in October, 1942 to see what railroad activity he could capture. There he found Silver Falls Timber Co. 2-6-2T #104 making up her train of empty log cars in the Silverton yards before departing back to the woods for another load of logs. In just a couple of years the Silver Falls Timber Co. would run out of timber and would shut down for good. It's logging locomotives would be sold and scattered to new owners. Both SFT #104 and her sister Baldwin tank prairie would be sold to the Peninsula Terminal Co. of Portland, Oregon where they would serve together into the 1960's switching the PTC yards in Portland. They would both be photographed many times in this 2nd career. Finally in the mid-1960's the PTC replaced the pair of steamers with a diesel and the engines were once again on the market. Fortunately, they were both soon purchased by the Black Hills Central RR of South Dakota and were soon put back to work again in steam at that final location. Today #104 is still in active service on the Black Hills Central. I wonder ho many people who see her today know anything about the first career she was originally designed to perform. My dad knew all the railroad folks at Peninsula Terminal an Frequently took us kids there in the late 50's-early 60's and got us cab rides in their engines while switching. I remember the 104 quite well!
