D&NE 28 First run to Two Harbors
Author: LarryDoyle

D&NE 28 returned, making her first run to Two Harbors, MN in over a half a century!!! Taken out of service by the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range as their No. 332, she finished out her first life working as No 28 on the Duluth & NorthEastern, a northern Minnesota logging railroad until they dieselized about 1965.

The Lake Superior Railroad Museum has just completed her restoration to active service, and yesterday, June 23, 2017 was her first public run, and her first run to Two Harbors since retirement by the DM&IR - running as No 28 but carrying No 332 on her smokebox front in honor of her DM&IR heritage.

I was pleased to be able to be part of her first revenue trip on the LSRM's North Shore Scenic Railroad. Some photos follow. Hopefully, others will share more.

1. She was lit off on Thursday, then banked for the night. Here she is at the shop at 7 am Friday being prepped to 10:30 departure.

2. Building pressure

3. Documentation that Larry Doyle can do some real work.

7. Having made the run to Two Harbors and spotted her train at the TH depot she is shown here during her wyeing operation

8. Waiting for the CTC signal to enter the track to the wye.

Add the 28 to the ranks of serviceable steam locomotives of the 21st century!!!!

Her second TH run was today, and tomorrow, Sunday, she will make two shorter trips 2/3 of the way to Two Harbors and return.

Next scheduled operation is weekend of July 14-16.

Here is a short video clip of 28 departing Duluth this morning on its second day of trips to Two Harbors. The clip would have been longer but my battery gave out!

How is the Clam-Shell bucket operated.
Do those two black cables or ropes do the job?
We don't see much coal loading out here on the west coast!

She does have a pretty nice stack. Valve timing will be improved over the next few weeks as some work will be done on the eccentrics (she's a Stephenson engine), and several of the bearings on the linkage are worn and will be replaced. Should square it up a bit.

Those two heavy "cables" are hydraulic lines.

I know. You guys took 28's little sister, Duluth and NorthEastern No 14, and converted her to oil. You can send Filmore and Western 14 back here any time - we'd take good care of her. I'd bet she'd be happy burning coal again. We've got a local source for Kentucky No. 5.

Very glad to hear that. I've a lifelong love for that engine and wish you guys the best for the future of F&W - and 14. I know you guys have political challenges and wish you the best.
