N&W 611 - 2017 Roanoke Trips
Author: typebangin

Better late than never, here's a look at Norfolk & Western 4-8-4 #611 pulling her last excursions of the 2017 season. The "J" operated 3 days of trips out of Roanoke, VA during the Memorial Day weekend, going east to Lynchburg over the Blue Ridge grade twice and west to Walton VA via Christiansburg Mtn four times (twice the last day). As always it was a great show, as 611 got to run over home rails again (with all trips departing just a short distance from the East End Shops where she was built in 1950).

Another excellent video, with a minimum of whistling. Extremely nice!

Wow, great video! Like Jack, I like it when the whistling is kept businesslike. Engine sounds great and the whistle isn't annoying. Love it.

Excellent site locations with superb long range use of your camcorder. Your images don't present
"rushed" images but rather enjoyable views of historic equipment working at it's best. Thanks for
all your hard work and your kind considerations in sharing it with the TO members.

Out of curiosity, with 611 working as she is in the video, is it possible to keep the stack cleaner?

I would think a lot of that would depend on the coal being used.

Love the crack of the exhaust of that engine! Never saw it in action, maybe some day, but it's a LONG ways from here.

I flew across the country (from California) to hear that stack talk last year. Well worth it.

Yet another wonderful video, James. Very impressed with your location scouting. Except for the people in the background standing on bridges getting smoked, your video was all train and scenery.

Nice video James, I couldn't make it out of Roanoke when I was there, but I was just happy just to see her for the 1St time and the coolest thing when I got there was the hotel guy where I was staying at was also a railfan!
