Steam & Excursion > Ex-DRGW F9B headed to RosevilleDate: 07/16/17 17:10 Ex-DRGW F9B headed to Roseville Author: Realist This unit was kept from the scrappers just after the merger. It went to Cheyenne with plans made to rebuild it into a unit that could help the steam engines when needed without looking so much like a diesel (a la Clinchfield). It also has dynamic brakes.
That plan was brutally murdered like so many others. The unit has had the traction motors removed and is headed to Roseville to either be used as a parts source for the existing snowplow snails or to be rebuild into a snail. Was there any original plans for the CNW 401 like the DRGW B unit? I know the 400 went to Spooner, WI and got scrapped and the 402 and 403 are now at the Royal Gorge Scenic RR. Date: 07/17/17 17:09 Re: Ex-DRGW F9B headed to Roseville Author: UP6936 Torrington Wyoming has wanted the CNW 401, and I think it was just a logistics deal of getting it there. The E8 is owned by a private individual who basically only wants the cab area, and the rest was supposed to be scrapped a long time ago. Not sure on the E9B as it wasn't a high priority for Omaha even when Steve was still around. The budget and some of the late 90's merger, along with 844's new firebox kinda killed that project.

Isn't that wheel lathe what could have been used to fix the flat spots on 844s drivers if it were operational? Date: 07/19/17 04:39 Re: Ex-DRGW F9B headed to Roseville Author: HotWater up3985 Wrote:

Since the flat-spotted drivers event happened in Texas, even if that wheel lathe had been installed in the Cheyenne shop, it wouldn't have helped much. All four driver pairs would STILL have had to be removed and shipped SOMEPLACE for turning. |
