Cole and Hodges Trucks compared
Author: LarryDoyle

Recent discussion on the PRR's Hoke truck used on K4, and other engines, led to a discussion of Cole vs. Hodges trucks, as well.

Here are photos of the Cole and the Hodges, showing the difference. The Cole has the added floating horizontal plate between the journal and the leaf-spring which relieves torsion on the spring, while the Hodges does not. The Cole was an Alco product, Hodges was Baldwin.

I would like to see the one with the "white-tires", while sitting in a deep curve, both sides...
Do you think that the short, double-pin connectors between the spring and equalizers helped reduce the 'twisting moment' applied to the leaf spring assembly?
And wouldn't the curve-deformed springs tend to act as an effective, built-in, centering feature?
