Steam & Excursion > Her Current Paint & Grime Does Little To Give Away Her Past!Date: 08/19/17 03:33 Her Current Paint & Grime Does Little To Give Away Her Past! Author: LoggerHogger The photographer that stumbled upon Fruit Growers Supply #34 switching cars around the mill at Westwood, California in the 1940's would have been surprised to know of the colorful history of this particular locomotive.
This good looking 2-6-0 was originally built by Baldwin in 1913 for the famous Ocean Shore Railroad that ran south out of San Francisco and along the Pacific Coast. On this line she was numbered 21 and pulled both passenger trains and freight trains until that line folded in the early 1920's. Soon after the OCR folded, she was sold to The Pacific Lumber Co. of Scotia, California where she entered logging service with them as their #34. She was later sold to the Red River Lumber Co. of Westwood and then in 1944 when RRL sold out to Fruit Growers Supply she wore their paint on her tender. Just a few years before she was retired FGS renumbered her as their #1. From the beautiful California Coast to the towering Redwoods and finally to the vast pine forests of Westwood, this 2-6-0 had quite a working career. Martin Edited 6 time(s). Would like to point out that a few days back someone was explaining slide valves and piston valves on steam locomotives. It appears that at some point, this locomotive was converted from slide valve to piston valve. Who supplied these "kits" for conversion atop the previous slide valve chamber? Baldwin? Date: 08/19/17 11:32 Re: Her Current Paint & Grime Does Little To Give Away Her Past! Author: LoggerHogger My original post showed her as a 2-6-0 in the first reference. They typo was only in the last reference. That is what the correction was.
It is easier if people PM me on these corrections so posts like these don't distract from the actual posts. Martin |
