Steam & Excursion > RBM&N 425 - Pacing the Great PacificDate: 10/12/17 10:51 RBM&N 425 - Pacing the Great Pacific Author: tehachapi-dave Climb along as we pace legendary Pacific #425 of the Reading, Blue Mountain & Northern on the return trips of her first weekend of Fall Color Excursions in 2017. Sit back and watch as the Pacific's hallowed stack talk is put on display, along with loud shrill of a former Reading RR 6-Chime Whistle. Enjoy!

Date: 10/12/17 12:34 Re: RBM&N 425 - Pacing the Great Pacific Author: ClubCar Excellent video. I'm guessing that the train was going around 40 to 45 miles per hour. Someday hopefully they will have the T-1 2102 in service once again to go along with the 425.

Date: 10/12/17 12:43 Re: RBM&N 425 - Pacing the Great Pacific Author: RBMN-ENGR Track speed for this particular section of the railroad is 25 mph. That is about what the engine is doing here. Also, when the engine is working this hard, the bell is impossible to hear in the cab. So, sometimes we just forget to shut it off! Lol

I remember reading about the 425 in Railfan mag back in the early '90's, then was thrilled to see her at Steamtown's grand opening in '95 where I got to see a lot her operations and have always been impressed with her.

Date: 10/12/17 16:20 Re: RBM&N 425 - Pacing the Great Pacific Author: tehachapi-dave Chris is correct on speed as I was the chase driver. We were never above 25 MPH.
What you really don't get from the video is how loud it really was, it really was deafening as both TJ and I commented after how much our ears hurt, but it was really cool. This Saturday we are in the gondola to Jim Thorpe so more to come. Tehachapi-Dave Edited 1 time(s). Last edit at 10/12/17 18:54 by tehachapi-dave. Perhaps a bell with a motor? Date: 10/12/17 20:08 Re: RBM&N 425 - Pacing the Great Pacific Author: Earlk Air ringer on the bell. Very common.

I am a western member, where was this filmed? Posted from iPhone Date: 10/13/17 07:35 Re: RBM&N 425 - Pacing the Great Pacific Author: Frisco1522 That's a sweet engine and sounds terrific. Video was kind of deceptive as she didn't sound like she was working that hard but she was in the corner. Steam engines, particularly "talkers" like her and 1522 were really hard to get the full effect on video. The bell "silently" ringing is a giveaway. Strong exhaust is another.
Seeing these videos just make me miss doing that even more. Date: 10/13/17 08:01 Re: RBM&N 425 - Pacing the Great Pacific Author: boejoe What highway/road were you following to catch this lengthy stretch of adjacent rail trackage?

I would be interested in hearing an explanation for why, at 25 MPH, she would needed to have been "in the corner". Date: 10/13/17 09:28 Re: RBM&N 425 - Pacing the Great Pacific Author: tehachapi-dave We started in Nesquehoning, PA (3 to 4 miles 3 to 4 west of Jim Thorpe) on PA Route 54 (Stock Street) and traveled west until we turned onto Park Ave. Grade is quite stiff here.

Grade here is a little under 1%. Train was a sold out 14 cars plus the diesel for dynamic brakes on the down grade. About 1/3rd more of a train than she was designed for, but she did the job very well. Chris Bost Leesport, PA Date: 10/13/17 17:07 Re: RBM&N 425 - Pacing the Great Pacific Author: Frisco1522 Thanks Chris. In the video, looked like the link was all the way down. She is an awesome little engine and I'd like to see her in person one of these days. Does she have a stoker? The Delta truck looks really nice on her.
Know the situation well. Always ran 1522 up Rolla Hill and several times far above her tonnage rating on the heavy 6 mile grade. Lots of noise. |
