Strasburg 89 - Stack Talk At Carpenters
Author: MaryMcPherson

Sometimes the best thing to do with a scene is to just let it play out.

Two weeks ago today, Strasburg Rail Road's 2-6-0 #89 was doing the day's work. The clouds came rolling in during the morning, the temperature stayed well below the forecasted high, and the winds kicked up. The winds were a steady 20 miles per hour, gusting to 35. The nice thing about the winds was that they carried the sound as the train worked its way uphill from Lehman Place back to Strasburg.

#89 is obviously the smallest of Strasburg's three operable locomotives. As such, it has to work harder than either 4-8-0 #475 or 2-10-0 #90 handling the road's trains. Also, its shorter wheelbase and smaller size contribute to the locomotive showing a lot more lateral motion than the larger engines. This is particularly evident when starting or when shooting telephoto.

In this scene, #89 has just left Lehan Place and can be heard working all the way up the hill. Our location is near Black Horse Road, across the track from the Carpenters Cemetery.

Enjoy!

I first met #89 up at the roundhouse at Belllows Falls, Vt.....back about 64-65...
Blount had it running there, did very credible job...up to Chester and back..

It’s a nice sized littl engine, from the 1890s/1900s.
It well preserved..

Well done, Strasburg...

W.

I wish a blank check would fall into the laps of the Wilmington and Western so they could finally restore their #92 of the same class. It's thee best suited loco for their operations, as evidenced by #89's command of 8 cars on a roller coaster ROW. 92 can drag what 98 cannot and do it without much concerned for what #58's wheel arrangement can do to track at speed....not that they go fast anyway, but I digress...

#91 sits inside a shop just an hour's drive from the SRR waiting for a crew to help the Middletown and Hummelstown RR run and maintain it...and enough passengers to show up to help pay for it's operations....

Great Video to you and Kurt!

I’m confused, nhiwwrr, the loco numbers are inconsistent...
Jumbled & conflated?

Back in about the same time frame, my Dad and I rode the 89 cab with Nelson
at the throttle. Dad rode one way and I rode the way back...fun times.

Wes...

#89 @ Strasburg
#91 @ Middletown and Hummelestown
#92 @ Wilmington & Western.

All CN 2-6-0s of the same class.

#98 is the 4-4-0 at W&W
#58 is the 0-6-0 at W&W
#92 is the 2-6-0 at W&W

Of the three engines at W&W, 92 is best suited for their operations, as exampled by 89's abilities in the above video but 92 hasn't steamed since 1972 and won't any time soon unless a big doner drops a nice check to them.

#58 will be coming out of the shop soon.

#98 needs some bugs worked out of it before it returns to service but the shop is focusing on getting 58 done first.
