Steam Railroading Was Not Always Exciting As We Can See Here!
Author: LoggerHogger

There are times in any job that, yes, it is just a job. We can see that sentiment has settled in with the hogger on Southern Pacific #1243.

This engine and her crew are waiting for new instructions in the Los Angeles yards in October, 1947. Guy L. Dunscomb happened by and used the crews moments of inactivity to his advantage when capturing this wonderful view of the engine and the frustration of her crew.

Oh well, things should get moving sometime soon. Until then, enjoy your cigarette and a rest.

Sometimes we forget that there were down times where railroaders had to wait for what to do next.
Thanks for reminding us with these photos.

Don't know the SP roster of steam engines, but is it possible there was a 1234?

Thanks!

First 1234 was a 4-4-0 (Schenectady 962, 1874). Second 1234 was class S-10 0-6-0 (Baldwin 49161, 7-1918). This one scrapped at Sacramento 3-14-57.

Interesting that the normal data that was stenciled on the cab below the engine number is not there.

Is it just me, or is that a big tender for a yard switcher?

Would there have been rules against the train crew washing the windows?

I used to have the builder's plate off that locomotive. I wonder where it went?

I'll let you know if it turns up.
