UP 3985 Glory! At Arnold Loop, Nevada, Westbound 7-14-1992
Author: RailRat

Inspired by the recent talk here on TO about Arnold Loop, and Silver Zone Pass, on the Ex-WP Main, East of Wendover, Nevada. Thought I would share this moment again, for those who may not have seen this yet. I actually got up here a few weeks before, and did some practice shooting, before the main event. Was VOTD on 12/30/16 (I think?)
With all due respect to the previouse UP Steam Crew, and Bob K., it was also a chance to see how the similar WP 401 class Challengers may have appeared back in steam's later years, as they were assigned this very same territory, between Salt Lake and Elko, Nevada, for a relatively short period of time before Diesels took over.

I was on that trip and I remembered how easily UP 3985 handled the train on the grade. I was really impressed. I sat in the front seat of that Dome Salt Lake City to San Jose.

Thanks for sharing.

Outstanding video, Jim. Just 4 days ago I was standing on that very spot where you took the video, only I was shooting still images. I have been going out to the loop since the 1980's; probably been there at least 25 times. The UP has recently made a change that limits vehicle access there. They have removed the concrete crossing "slabs" at the very apex of the loop. You can not drive across the tracks there anymore and get access to the interior of the loop. Last week, I just parked my Jeep out of sight below track level and walked in.

Considering that we fans may not get to enjoy seeing and filming the 3985 for some time, if ever, I thank you Jim and everyone else who has shared video and still photo memories of this fine locomotive with us.

4 Stars !!!! As far as UP 3985 , this is about as great an action video as I have ever seen. It's no wonder that the UP bought 105 Challenger locomotives. THANKS for sharing ! --Kelly

Thank you all very much for your kind remarks on my latest UP 3985 re-posts lately!

Wouldn't have been possible however without the UP and Steam Crew Program.

Makes all the time and $$ I invested in VHS to digital processing equipment well worth it...25 years later.
