Steam & Excursion > When You Think Of This Railroads Engine #1 This Is Not It!Date: 02/15/18 03:27 When You Think Of This Railroads Engine #1 This Is Not It! Author: LoggerHogger When mention of Southern Pacific's locomotive #1 is made most will naturally think of the ancient C.P. Huntington that was one the Central Pacific's first pieces of motive power. However, a few other engines bore the #1 for SP over the years. Here is one.
The trim little 2-4-2T was turned out by Baldwin in March 1884. She had a number of different jobs and numbers given to her over the years until she finally became the Sacramento Shops switcher #1 in 1916. She and her crew have paused to have their portrait taken by SP photographer David Joslyn in the early 1920's. This SP #1 would continue in service until finally being set aside and scrapped in 1936. After that time, the coveted Engine #1 spot of the SP roster reverted to the famous C.P. Huntington. Martin Edited 3 time(s). Last edit at 02/15/18 03:45 by LoggerHogger. Diebert & Strapac's Southern Pacific Company Steam Locomotive Compendium shows it built as Park & Ocean #8 in March 1884 (Baldwin 7243). More on the P&O can be found here: http://www.cable-car-guy.com/html/ccsfwhensteam1.html . SP bought the locomotive in 1885, initially making it their #80. They renumbered it 1010 in 1891, then Sacramento Shops #1 (2nd) on March 1, 1906, and finally to SPMW 568 on February 23, 1916. Sacramento scrapped the locomotive in November 1936, and an 0-6-0T eventually took over the SPMW 568 road number in 1946. |
