SP 4449 in 1984 - follow up to SR's 'Just Enjoy' series
Author: spdaylight

Following up on SR's fine series of B&W images this past few days featuring SP 4449 in 1984 and Hot Water's comment about adding a diesel at Black Butte for braking purposes heading downhill to Dunsmuir, thought I would post a couple of scenes I shot while chasing the train from Klamath Falls to Sacramento.

The first shows SP SD45 #7399 being backed up to the train at Black Butte. The second scene shows the combined consist at the top of the Loop south of Mott before heading down the grade to Dunsmuir.

spdaylight --
That is a superb and wonderful video! And you recorded the 4449's beautiful and haunting whistle very well -- thank you very, very much!

Can't -- the SP 7399 and her similarly-painted sisters were all scrapped some years ago. :( And it would take megabux to get another trainset of Daylight-painted cars. And getting the UP to allow another excursion like the Louisiana World's Fair Daylight to happen would be very,
very difficult. But remember the old Dutch saying, "The difficult? That will take a while. The impossible? That will take a bit longer." And -- "Never say Never!"

Very cool video!
Forgot about that daylight painted SD45.
Any Idea how many of those units were painted that way, and why?

So how did they pull together all those Daylight cars? I remember seeing it on the return from New Orleans. My dad took us to Benicia to watch it go by. I got to see it a few times growing up, but no videos. So thanks for posting all these fantastic photos and videos.

I’ve had fun showing one of my sons, maybe he’ll get to see it in person one of these days.

I rode Klamath Falls to Sacramento and Lafayette to New Orleans. Bought tickets for my folks to ride Los Angeles to San Louis Obispo. Great memories.

I agree, nice shots Boiling Man and great video Craig, I was 9.5 at the time but man I still remember that train like it was yesterday, the only time my dad and I really did some serious railfanning, and that was on the 8TH of May!

Just Googled my own question.
I see only one SD45 painted in this exact paint sceme an re-fitted with 16 cylinder prime mover as a prototype for all the re-builds, but was deemed as too expensive.

#7342 is still alive... as CITX #3096.

As for #7399, it was last reported being the EMDX #2816, and its last status is unknown.
