So Few Of These Were Made We Almost Forget They Were Offered!
Author: LoggerHogger

When we think of the popular Shay locomotive turned out by the Lima Locomotive Works, we tend to only look to see if the one before us is either a 2-truck or 3-truck model. However they had other variations available.

For those buyers who needed the flexibility that the Shay offered for light track and steep grades but not all the power that was available, they could chose the 2-cylinder model rather than the more popular 3-cylinder version.

In 1901 this little narrow gauge 20-ton Shay was built for a power company in New York State who shipped it to the Yukon Territory. She originally was built to burn coal. Her 2 cylinders produced 10,680 pounds of tractive force.

She later was sold to a machinery dealer in Seattle, Washington who, in turn, sold her to the Biles-Coleman Lumber Co. of Omak, Washington. Biles-Coleman quickly converted her to burn wood as we see here in this early 1922 photo of her as their #101. She would later be converted to burn oil.

She would last until 1940 when she was deemed too worn out to repair any further.

Looks a lot like a “phase 2” Kelley Island Lime and Transport loco memorialized in the Keystone Locomotive Works white-metal kit. It actually never went to New York, it was purchased by NY interests and shipped to Dawson Electric Light & Power Co. (Northern Light Power & Coal Co.), #1, Coal Creek, Yukon Territory, CAN; where it was converted to wood. Rest according to Martin.
