One diesel that'll look at home with a Nickel Plate steam engine
Author: nathansixchime

The Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society has raised over $6,000 for its effort to restore Nickel Plate Road SD9 diesel locomotive no. 358.

The dedicated restoration crew is making good progress meeting the $35k goal and restoring the locomotive to service. Details and additional progress pics here: https://fortwaynerailroad.org/2018/03/project-358-makes-strides-into-new-year/

The 358 was built in 1957 to replace steam locomotives like Nickel Plate no. 765 and will eventually operate in tandem service with the locomotive as additional motive power during excursions and public events and to help the story of the transition from steam to diesel.

The 358 in its distinctive Nickel Plate paint schemes through the years. The earlier black and white photo is at Zanesville, Ohio. It'll be returned to its as-delivered, striped body look.

I don't know about recent years but 20 years ago that 4327 was a good unit.

A lot of bad things can happen to a unit in 20 years.

NS SD9M 58 was not former NKP 358. It was former SOU (CG) SD9 199/CG 207.

NKP 358 became NW 2358 after the NKP merged with the NW, then it was later renumbered as NW 2958 after the NW and SOU merger. It was rebuilt by NS in 1991 and became NS (NW) SD9M 57. It was retired by NS in March of 2010.

Wow! The 58 looks really strange with the electronic bell mounted in the old bell mounting bracket.
