Business cars depart Vancouver, WA Friday afternoon at 1600, destined San Bernardino, via Bend, Keddie, Sacramento, Stockton, Bakersfield - sans steam engine!

You Know BNSF if you really want to make CA fans happy, use 4449 from Portland to Sacramento, then 3751 to San Berdoo, wait, can’t she is getting recertification on the boiler, so 4449 all the way! Have her bring back a short freight train to Portland....

Tried not to be in the way today (spent 20 minutes trackside) - here is a taste of today’s action.

Taken on an IPhone.

VERY NICE!!!!! I always get a kick out of folks standing on the left side of the right-of-way, giving the "blow the whistle" signal to the FIREMAN (as the guy is doing in your video).

Yes, because the general public knows the difference.

And just what makes you think that THAT guy, in the video above, was "the general public"?

He could be telling the fireman to tell the engineer to blow the whistle? If he wasn't the general public...

From experience, when starting and accelerating out of a passing siding like that, BOTH the Engineer AND Fireman at a bit busy.

There was quite a bit of "General public" trackside this week. The local papers kept pretty close tabs on the train's whereabouts via Facebook so locals could go see it. So there's a very high chance they were just general public with no railroad knowledge who was impressed by what they saw. And, even if you're on the fireman's side, and you DON'T do the whistle signal, there's zero chance the message will be relayed versus a small chance it will be relayed. Plus, it's just fun!

For what it's worth, I do ask my Engineer for "a little whistle", under appropriate circumstances. There is no sense yelling over at him, when I know he is stressed and VERY busy paying attention to conditions ahead, and/or managing throttle & reverse gear. There is a time and place for everything, even "having fun" with the folks at trackside.

Our of curiosity was this time of year chosen deliberately or is this just when the shooting schedule allowed?
