Pacing 4449 through the Gorge
Author: pdxsteam

As most of you know by now, 4449 was out and about this week participating in the filming of an IMAX movie for BNSF. I chased the train on April 11th from Vancouver to Wishram and back. It was truly an amazing day made even better by the lack of other chasers, the absence of traffic, and the half-decent weather.

I was fortunate enough to get several shots that day, including some pacing between Carson and Bingen. Note the IMAX camera rigging on the front of the locomotive. My full chase video from the day can be viewed on my pdxsteam Youtube channel.

To be so close to this beautiful machine traveling at speed is an experience that words, pictures, or even videos cannot match. Hopefully, she will be back out on the mainline sometime in the future, even if it is only for private occasions such as this.

I caught the return trip on Monday. It was well after dark by the time they left Avery westbound. I caught an unbroken, uncontested(aside from a friend who drove separately), track speed chase from Bingen to Stevenson. I had never done that at night, and the experience was absolutely incredible.

That is why we love steam. Anyone unfamiliar with how a steam locomotive turns steam pressure into traction, will now understand after viewing that video. Nice job.

Actually steam locomotives are essentially "heat machines", thus it is the HEAT of the steam, and NOT the pressure of the steam, that produces the work, or Horse Power. Think heat of expansion. The steam only transfers the extreme heat from the fire, thru the valves and into the cylinders, where the work is performed.

Nicely done, watching the tender truck and the rest of the engine through the bump was interesting.

This is a superb piece of video, and a superb machine.

If one has never seen Rocky Mountain Express don't wait, try to see it. And try to see it in it's full IMAX glory!!!
