Looks like the 2nd and 3rd hoops from the bottom could use just a little wrench work.

It looks like several of the Hoops have been removed in the past years for other use.

It is ruinous to drain wooden water tanks...
The tanks swell when water level activity is on-going.
The wood stays swollen and water tight....

Once drained for an extended period, the wood shrinks, the bands loosen, and the ability to retain water, without leaking, is forever lost...
Also, damp wood attracts insects and termites which further endangers the life of the tank...

The degree of the shrinkage is directly reflected by the amount of sagged bands....
A true mark of neglect and dim understanding ...

Oh, well!

Wooden water tanks should be filled with saw dust or bark, preferably red wood saw dust to give the tank the weight needed to keep them solid so the wind does not make them shake and move. The Apache Indians own this tank and it is a shame they will not permit the Friend from putting a ladder up to the side and nailing the bands back up and tighten them. Call Dulce and raise hell with the Chief at their Casino.
The tank at Bondad is for sale. The RGS Tank at East Mancos is another private tank that is rarely seen but should receive saw dust to hold it down.
Maybe a very light volcanic pumice rock [40# cft] could be cheaper than saw dust [13# Cft].

Navajo Tank in the old days
Author: jbwest

Back in 1968. Comparing the pix, sometime after 1968 the tank appears to have gotten a new roof, so maybe some effort has been made by the reservation to help preserve it.
