She's A Pretty Fancy Train For This Very Remote Location!
Author: LoggerHogger

Certain passenger trains during the age of steam were impressive for their speed and style as the went from city to city through some of the country's more populated areas. However some passenger trains of a much smaller scale were equally noteworthy to those who stopped to see them pass by in areas that were quite remote.

We see one of these trains being pulled by D&RGW K-28 #478 as it passes through Aztec, New Mexico in June 1958. She makes quite a sight with her brightly painted yellow cars as she passes over the Animus River bridge. She is bound for the town of Farmington, where she will be turned and serviced for the return trip.

She makes quite a sight against this remote landscape.

IIRC this was the Memorial Day trip that could not get to Silverton due to high water, the Farmington diversion was about as rare as rare mileage gets.

Is this bridge still in place?

Unless the river has been narrowed there, the current bridge is missing a couple of spans or trestles. The current picture shows 6 vertical braces where the old picture shows 5 vertical braces. Maybe it was replaced later?

Correct the Rocky Mountain RR Club trip ran to Farmington, but it was pulled by 493, not one of the K-28's. There was an early June trip by the Illini RR Club which featured 476, but they went to Silverton Not Farmington. So this is probably not one of those two trips. We have movies of the 493 to Farmington in a couple of our DVD's(1958).

There were other groups that ran specials on the narrow gauge. This shot is of a 4 day Alamosa -Durango-Silverton-Farmington-Alamosa trip put on by the Pacific Coast Chapter R&LHS.

In addition to the D&RGW narrow gauge, the trip included steam on the Nevada Northern, Great Western, Colorado & Southern & Union Pacific.

Looks to me like a posed shot on a brand new bridge.

I wasn't disputing the location, just the trip date. It is the Farmington line, which was not used much for excursions
since most went to Silverton.
