The Very New Meets The Even Newer Both In Mixed Train Service!
Author: LoggerHogger

This meet at Bennett, B.C. on the White Pass & Yukon Railroad in the summer of 1955 is not the meeting of old versus new motive power as it may look. Actually, neither engine is more that 8 years old here.

The trim looking Baldwin 2-8-2 #72 that we see with her mixed train on the right was turned out in June 1947 as one of the very last steam locomotives built by Baldwin.

Meeting her that day was General Electric #91 that was built in June 1954 as part of the dieselization program of the WP&Y Railroad that had started in June 1947 when the WP&Y bought both steam locomotive #72 and their first diesel locmotive.

Clearly the change from steam to diesel on the WP&Y was being done gradually.

Excellent! As a White Pass fanatic, this image makes my day. This serves as a reminder to dig out some of my items from the back of the cave.
