Sacramento Valley Live Steamers Spring Meet
Author: BoilingMan

I'm not a member, and I really don't know a whole heck of a lot about the live steam hobby  So I won't pretend I know what I'm talking about (my normal default)
Just some take-away pics to enjoy.

Nice! A few comments:

1) Wonder why that BEAUTIFUL PRR K4s has a Worthington Feedwater heater?

2) That SP Daylight is also magnificent, but I'm curious why the modeler has the large billboard "SOUTHERN PACIFIC" lettering on the tender, yet still has the train number indicators in the forward "as delivered" position?

Because it's a PRR K5. There were only two of them. Sort of a souped-K4.

Well now, thanks, as THAT is VERY interesting. Sure is a beautiful model.

Just curious, what does the K5 or GS4 weigh? How do they move them from their truck (or other carrier) onto those raised garden tracks?

There is a lift on one of the garden tracks for loading onto truck or trailer.

As to weight, l don’t know and even if someone told me I’d probably forget it in about 12min. I’m pretty bad with big numbers.
In another life, in a galaxy far far away, I spent time sitting in the cab of the AFT/SP 4449 answering the public’s questions. The stumper was always “How much does it weigh?” Jeez... Heck’a.
Even if I COULD remember the right number, what in the world were they going to do with that information?! Win a bet?
Maybe it comes up on Jeopardy now and then.

Yes, it's a K-5.  I chatted with the owner for a bit.  He built both the locomotive and caboose (Fantastic Work!).  He's now building a Pennsy I-1 Decapod with a "long range" tender.  The tender is done (he had pics on his phone- Wow!) That thing scales out to 6' long!  As for the loco itself, he's about done with the frame.  It should be crowd pleaser!

When Hotwater builds his own live steamer he can show us how it should be modeled.

Well, I have assisted on a few inch and a half scale live steam models. However, I'm now to old to operate those "crotch rockets". However, I still appreciate their machining and construction skills.

Just giving you a hard time, heard a live steamer tell a guy that one time when he was questioning his engine.

A friend of mine who works for Amtrak owns the Santa Fe Northern in these pictures. It is a 1.6" Scale Model of the ATSF #2926 that is currently being restored in ABQ. The Daylight is the same that was posted earlier. He said there is a lot of history between the two locomotives and the live steam clubs they've traveled to. These are not my photos but I did get permission to post.

The Daylight weighs about 1200 pounds when full of water. I assume the same for the other large locomotive. At LALS I had to help retail a hot full 4-8-4, and it took a few of us, me using the retail bar(a large fulcrum) and about 4 others guiding the trucks back on.

There was a K5 a few years ago at our local Live Steamers meet. If this is the same one it is quite a monster of a machine. A beautiful model! If not the fact that there is at least 2 K5's out there is great!

These are really great models. Some of the live steamers I've seen look like a dog's breakfast and I wonder to myself if you're going to build something that involved, why not do it right. But then, the owner didn't ask me to finance it so............
If I were about 20 years younger and had a few bucks to spare I'd wet my beak.

They get real expensive when they go to 2 1/2"scale 7.5" gauge like the 41 is. Know a fellow who used to build them a K27 or K36 custom built took about two or three years of 40hr weeks and about 300K of pocket money.

This next week at Train Mountain Chiloquin Or its the narrow gauge meet and should be about a dozen or more of that size show up. Know the Burns will show up with two. Got to the web site and sign up for the meet info on the web site for it.

Go to Train Mountains web site there are videos on there showing how things are done here. Weight is depending on the engine and if its mostly steel or a combination to keep the weight down of also aluminum but can be well over 1999lb for a large K36.
