It’ll take about 10 minutes of steady pounding to warm-up those 4 cylinders... Another reason I love steam-operated cylinder cocks... However, I’d bet these are air operated... A wonderful thought-inspiring picture. Love it!! W. Posted from iPhone Date: 07/16/18 07:25 Re: 1218 Steams up an admirer Author: sixbit Beauty and the Beast

Because they require boiler pressure steam to keep them closed, thus if there is any sort of moisture, i.e. liquid, in the cylinder, the hydraulic pressure of that liquid will overcome the steam pressure keeping the cock closed, thus releasing that water (with a loud pop in the process). The steam operated type cylinder cocks are normally open, requiring boiler pressure to close them, thus they are very safe when towing/moving a dead locomotive around the terminal. The other brand of cylinder cocks are normally closed, and require main reservoir air pressure to open them, thus even if there is some small amount of moisture, i.e. liquid, in the cylinder the hydraulic pressure still will not ope the cock. Also, with the air operated type, if there is no main reservoir air pressure, the cylinder cocks are CLOSED, and towing/moving a locomotive around the terminal without air pressure can seriously damage a piston rod retaining key, or cylinder head retaining studs. Understood. Thanks for the information. Posted from Android Date: 07/16/18 21:45 Re: 1218 Steams up an admirer Author: ATSFSuperChief 1218 was the beauty and also a wonderful beast. The lady was also attractive, but big steam rules my life.

I knew that was the location the minute I saw the picture. I saw her run by at speed a couple of times which was even more fantastic, but that was the only time I got to stand next to that beast and hear her breathe. This would have been 1991 and she was there with sister 611 and 4501. What a trio! Too bad that was the only time such a gathering happened. I'm so glad we made the treck up there. I was too young to fully appreciate how historic the moment was, but not too young to appreciate how impressive those 3 steam engines were together. I get chills now writing about it.
