What was the or is the main reason for washt down the coal load was it just for dust control.?

I am told by cleaning the coal it will burn cleaner.

The railroad told me by giving the coal a bith it will burn cleaner so less sparks.

This makes sense to me, as I have seen sawdust used to make beautiful spark shows with steam tractors working hard on a dynamometer at the Western Minnesota Steam Threshers Reunion at Rollag MN
