What's with the diesel?

Already asked, and answered,,,,,,,,,,quite a number of times.

Since there are no turning faculties at either end of the run, the METRA diesel pulls the whole consist BACK to Joliet, in order to run eastbound to Chicago. Plus, it most likely provides HEP for the train.

Quite a number of the times it has been asked and answered has been to the same individual that I referenced.

Because it is pushing! Can't you tell? All that steam out of that there tea kettle is for show, to convince the public that it is running. Just like when Thomas shows up at a rail museum.... he is not really pulling that train you know.....in fact, he is not really a useful engine either.... getting in trouble, not listening to Sir Thopham Hat, complaining......

That is why there is the diesel

Well here's a question that hasn't been answered...Did that Metra engineer have his "bail block" in. Just having
a little fun with the Hogheads out there.

"Bail Block"

You're closer to the truth than you think. Since our trains run with Blended Braking, one of the things our engineers rarely do is actuate (bail) the independent brake. Doing so nullifies the Blended Braking. As a result, our engineers, unless they have previous freight experience, have never had any exposure to stretch braking which is a requirement for a train like this. A couple of them needed some guidance, but they did a great job handling a train that is nothing like what they're used to running.

But, we didn't use any "Bail Blocks" on these trips.

I'll bet that semi driver was quite startled to see that smoke shoot up alongside the bridge he was crossing!  I'd love to see his face.

No place closer to Joliet to park 765 and train overnight? A long way back to 47th St yard.

No.

A long way back to 47th St yard.

Not really.

No room to not only park the train in Joliet, but service the train - water, fuel, restrooms - and the locomotive - coal, water, etc. Not to mention the mass of people, room for 15 cars, personal vehicles, cranes, food and drink deliveries, etc. We need a yard that can hold a small army.

If you've never seen what goes on and the people involved to get a train like this ready to go for the next day's runs, it would amaze you.  I would liken it to what goes on with a fighter squadron between missions.

There's something ethereal about steam at night. When 4449 ran its IMAX trips, I chased the westbound leg the first day. It was already probably 10 PM, and there was only one other foamer in pursuit. Track speed from Bingen to Stevenson, pitch black night, no caravan of chasers... Still gives me chills.
