Sometimes It Was The Climate That Designed The Steam Shops!
Author: LoggerHogger

While many shop facilities that were built to maintain and service steam motive power for railroads during the age of steam were imposing structures that fully enclosed their activities, there were a few like these that were much simpler and open for viewing.

The hot and arid climate at Magma, Arizona clearly played a huge part in the design of the engine house for the Magma Arizona Railroad seen here.  While next to the simple roof structure to the right is the machine shop that served not only the railroad but the mining complex itself at Magma, the engine house was built on a much simpler scale.

In this view we see Magma 2-8-2 #7 receiving some serious servicing under the roof of the open-air structure while 2-6-0 #6 stands by on the ready track between the engine house and the machine shop.

While a simple structure the Magma Arizona engine house worked well to keep steam in service on the line well into the 1960's.

I like the cutout in the end for the top of the locomotive to pass thru.  The locomotives must have got taller after it was built or someone was off in the measurements.

Looks like it was self designing on the left side there were taller things.

Actually the building is suited more for the hot climate ie a roof which keeps the freaking monsoon off the
people trying to work on the locomotive!

Looks like the worker sitting down in front of the locomotive is also suited for the hot climate :-)

Now guys, you have to remember, it's up in the mountains and it's cooler there! Speaking of monsoons, I remember going over the
top of the hill above Superior one year, mid Summer, and it was incredibly green. About an hour later I found out why.

"Cooler" being a relative term. It's only 105 instead of 115!

True but from time to time they actually get a dusting of snow up there.
