Steam & Excursion > It May Be Early Morning But She will Do this Run Once More Today!

The first rays of sunshine are streaming through the trees at the yard entrance to the West Side Lumber mill property in Tuolumne, California in this early morning scene shot in 1960.  The first log train of the day is entering the yard and proceeding past the oil and water facilities and the car shops  to the log dump.

West Side Shay #8 and her crew have been working since 1:00am this day as that is when they went on duty and took their first train of empties out to the woods.  They will make 2 turns this day and this is only the first of those.

Such was a typical day on the West Side during her last year of operation.

Tuolumne was not a "quiet little town" when the mill and railroad were running! Then again, being wakened by a shay dragging empties into the woods while whistling for the Tuolumne road crossing, would not be the worst way to wake up at 1:00 am.
