Denver & Rio Grande movie

Watch this classic and wondering what happened to the two ng locomotives 268, 319 used in the movie. Filmed on the Durango & Silverton trackage.

Um they crashed them in the end.

Both the 319 and the "268" were scrapped after the staged wreck for the climax of the movie.

Now, the Real 268 is still on display at the Gunnison Pioneer Museum.  The one used in the colision was the D&RGW 345 renumbered to "268" as shown by Martin Hansen here...

I saw that movie in the theater when it came out and hated that then and still do.  What a waste.  I guess in the early 50s nobody thought about that.

They probably would have been scrapped anyway. Probably used these locos because they were either no longer needed, or were due for extensive repairs, or most likely both.
