Not Only When They Were New But Later On Steamers Did This!
Author: LoggerHogger

We have seen many photos of brand new steam locomotives being shipped out from their builders with their rods off in transit as they traveled over many foreign railroads heading to their new owner.  Well, this was a process that many locomotives went through several more times over their years of service.

Here we see White River Lumber Company Baldwin 2-8-2 #5 in transit late in her career en-route from her former home at Enumclaw, Washington to her new home on the Schafer Brothers Logging Co, at Brady, Washington.  This is the second such move from owner to owner #5 has made.  She had originally been built for the Silver Falls Timber Co. as their #102 for service at Silverton, Oregon.

The move to Brady would prove to be her last.  After just a few short years with the Schafer Brothers, and despite receiving a brand new boiler built by Baldwin while she was there, #5 would be deemed surplus after Schafer bought a diesel locomotive and #5 would be sold to a scrapper.

There would be no last trip for #5 to make to the scrapper.  The scrapper came to her and cut her up on the spot at Brady.

What sort of speed restriction would an engine like this have when it was in transit like this?

Generally used locomotives that were being shipped from owner to owner were placed on trais with speed restictioins of 30 mph or less.
