Santa Fe 4-8-4 Northern 3768 (Baldwin 1938) is at Wichita Union Station in June 1977.
I'll let wag216 describe what happened next ---

"The ATSF 3768 was turned at the Santa Fe roundhouse. Too long? Yes, the loco was turned and then the tender turned. Great fun, I think?"

Certainly a very handsome locomotive and looks great with a rods-down view. Kind of surprised that it couldn't be turned with the shorter tender. What was the turntable length?

From the Emporia extra board, I would ocassionally get sent to North Wichita to work switch engines. 3768 was there at the turntable seperated from it's tender for a long time. I'd always look over and try to see it when I went through there on freight trains too. One day it was gone, and it showed up back at the museum. Always wished I'd have been on whatever switch job got selected for the move, either direction.

When I worked for another road in Wichita i was told that BNSF offered the downtown museum, where this engine is displayed,a "donation" of the former Frisco yard, property and a few miles of track to run on. However, the firmly, entrenched seniors of the museum turned them down as they believed the future of their location was more favorable long term. Think of it. They could have had the former Frisco engine house, small yard and a few miles of track for a short ride just north and east of the ATSF one...and they turned it down. Hard to understand.

probably no taxes on the land, but they may have had to have insurance, and hazmat responsibility?    maybe operation was wasn't their goal?   But it would have been great, if they could have run from the depot.  colo rr museum was offered  the car at gold coast rr museum they turned it away, as they were concentrating on NG equipment at the time.

What would have been more interesting wopuld have been if Grand Canyon had managed to rebuild a few of these native 4-8-4's instead of 2-8-0's...
