Skookum's Repairs Are Successful And She Runs On The OCSR!
Author: LoggerHogger

This week we had a full Oregon Coast Scenic Railroad shop crew assigned to working on Skookum, with the first order of business being to diagnose and correct the timing issue that had cut short Skookum's operation during the Lerro Charter in October.  Well, the repairs worked, and Skookum took to the rails yesterday afternoon for the first time to strut her stuff.

With her damaged parts repaired over the past few weeks Team Skookum diagnosed the timing issue as actually originating in the high pressure engine valve train.  Once this was corrected with new keys being made to set the HP eccentrics correctly the bind in the low pressure mechanism went away and you can see the results here.

With the sun beginning to set in Garibaldi, Oregon, Skookum was back together and at full pressure.  All her running gear parts were back on and she was ready to roll.  We see OCSR CMO Scott Wickert in her cab as he put Skookum through her paces first up and down the yard track and then out on the OCSR mainline out of town along the bay.  She worked flawlessly.

In the coming weeks there still are some additional small items on Skookum that will be addressed by the shop crews, but this was another big milestone for her return to full operation.

We still have a few tickets left for the second and lst TRAINS Magazine Skookum photo charter in March (this coincides with Winterail).  If you miss snapping up one of these tickets, you will regret it as this may be the last time to see and photograph Skookum in her natural environment along the rivers and in the forests of the Pacific Northewest.  Tickets are avalable by calling OCSR, 503-842-7972.

Congratulations to everyone associated with the restoration that returned this one-of-a-kind locomotive back to operation.
Thank you for another piece of living history that us railfans can enjoy!

Cute little engine, it's like a Mikado that bends in the middle.

That's pretty much the reason for the design. A logging Mike that can go around Shay curves.
