Book recommendation on ATSF 4-8-4's?
Author: MJV1988

Hi all, Happy New Year everyone!! I'm looking for a good book on the Santa fe 4-8-4's and am hoping some of you on here can help me in a good choice to buy? Looking for something with good information, pictures, detailed technical data and improvements that were done to these engines over the years, along with final days in steam and survivors today. Thanks

Farrington's "Santa fe's Big 3" is in my collectiion and I am glad of it. It's older, but full of good information on the 4-8-4's.

Note though that it covers not just the Northerns, but also the 4-6-4's and 2-10-4's...

‘Iron Horses of the Santa Fe Trail’ by E. D. Worley is an very good source. All steam and early diesel locos are covered.
‘Santa Fe Locomotive Development: Journey to Supreme Steam and Early Diesels’ is an excellent source. Larry Brasher offers a more technical study of the development of the Santa Fe’s finest.

If you have the "Trains Magazine Complete Collecition 1940-2010" back-issues DVD or a set of paper back-issues, Lloyd Stagner had a good article on Santa Fe's 4-8-4's in the February 1987 issue.  As I recall, there was also an article on Santa Fe 4-8-4's in the "3751 issue" of Railfan & Railroad (April 1992).

I would second the Farrington book (Santa Fe's Big 3).  It is excellent if you're interested in test data.
