Some Beautiful Steam Railroading Scenes Deserve A Closer Look!
Author: LoggerHogger

Photography of steam motive power takes all forms.  For the railfans of the 1930's and 1940's the tried and true roster shot was often all that was available due to film speed and shutter speed.  This limited the types of images of steam locomotive that were preserved of these fine machines during their operating days.  Fortunately not all photographers were so limited.

This series of views was captured at Castle Gate, Utah on the Denver & Rio Grand Railroad on a sheet of 8 x 10 film.  This likely was a professional photographer who may have been working for the railroad when he took this fine portrait.  The size of his camera coupled with the better film and shutter speed yielded for us this image with great detail.

The over-all portrait showing the train with it's huge articulated locomotive on the point against the famous rock formations that give Castle Gate it's name, was clearly what the cameraman wanted to capture.  When we zoom in on the image, however, the image yields us a different perspective and even more detail of this train bearing down on the photogrpaher.

No matter which one you prefer, they all show a wonderful view of big steam power in action against a stunning backdrop.

Martin

Amazingly sharp image when both sides of Castle Gate were still there. Thank you so much for posting such a wonderful image. Made my day!

I thought it was a crime that they allowed half of the Gate to be dynamited for the Interstate.

There's no Interstate in the area, only US 6/US 191
