Where is UP 4014 in Cheyenne?
Author: 2839Canadian

Am planning a visit to Cheyenne to see the 4014.  Where exactly is the facility where the restoration work is being done?

Any chance of getting into the building?

Thanks in advance

The 4014 restoration is being done in the UP's old back shop in the middle of the yard and the last I had heard was that the crew had shut off tours of the shop while they are deep into the rebuild of the locomotive. It is scheduled to appear in Ogden Utah for the May 10th Sesquicentennial ceremonies.

see it from an overpass that goes by the station, with a big sidewalk, nice days the doors are open

same bridge you can see   where the crew changes at the depot, and you can eat and drink inside the depot, fast food and gas  all right there with  activity.

What's the name of the street?  Being from the East I am not at all familiar with Cheyenne.

Also, after the rebuild is completed is the UP just going to run it to Ogden for a static display?  Will there be any excursions powered by the 4014?  Seems like a LOT of time and money spent.

Thanks again.

I can't believe it's only 4 months away, that date at Promontory.  4 months to finish diassembling, checking, ordering, inspecting and installing parts, then actual live steam testing.  I would imagine at this point it needs to be a 24-7 job to get it done.

For those who haven't been there, it's pretty much in the middle of the yard, not accessed by public streets and at this
point walk-ins would be referred to the UP Special Agents. Save your trip for whenever the first breakin run might be.

The back shop is in the middle of the UP's Cheyenne Yard and it is on its own private street onto the property off of Ames Avenue.

What is left to be dissembled?

From what I am hearing the UP will display the UP 4014 in Ogden, possibly with the 844. The UP does not do excursions other than for corporate commitments. So the only excursion they may be doing is for the Rail Giants group in Pomona California from whom they got the 4014 back for restoration. There is no date set on that as far as I know.

They are assembling the engine back together so there is no more disassembling left. They will likely need to get the engine together, then pressure test it for the FRA inspectors. Then there will be the need for test runs to check out their work on the road before it is ready to head to Ogden.

Mr. Krieger, between us, the thousands here on TO, and that you might hear better than us, being you are nearer to the action in Cheyenne, care to give us e educated guess on a date for trial runs? March 19th, April 1, May 1?

And how long does it take to get to Ogden from Cheyenne, and who would be the other steam engineer for the 844 if the doubleheader?

Thanks. Like your posts

I won't speak for Bob but the traditional run has been Chian to Green River and then Green River to Ogden and I'm
holding to March 19th!

I'm sure others can confirm additional information, but I've heard there will be some test runs from Cheyenne to Greeley, CO. These make sense for shake down runs, which would need to occur Feb/March. And while a Cheyenne to SLT takes less than a day for normal freights, my guess would be more like 2 days for a trip with this much public attention. Maybe someone has historical information on 844 or 3885 doing the Sacramento time line back in the day?

I'm looking forward to firm dates/times from UP in the near future. Saving vacation time.

Are these pics from today? Only reason I ask is I noticed the Rio Grande B-unit sitting stored on the one roundhouse track. I thought they got rid of that awhile ago?

When I was there last July both E9 A's were in the round house and the B was outside. Can't imagine where theres room to put it inside either for this reason and others I think the photo is atleast a couple years old. Also they usually run Cheyenne to Rock springs I believe. Also heard the two Steamer's would travel seprately not double headed which means the tool car and 209 would probably deadhead back to Cheyenne and maybe one of the water bottles so both could go with the 4014.
When we went out in 94 it was Omaha to North Platte, North Platte to Cheyenne, Layed over a day in Cheyenne, Cheyenne to Rock Springs and Rock Springs to Ogden. This was behind 3985. The "E"s and more of the Yellow fleet went to Salt Lake City in a different train. It was really cool to see most of the Bussiness car fleet behind Union Pacifics station in Salt Lake.
Can't do that now.

When Green River became a bit difficult to be out of the way overnight we began overnighting in Rock Springs on the north siding where we had water and could get a fuel truck up to the locomotive. Then it was on into Ogden from there.
