Both The Commute And The Passenger Trains Needed One Of These!
Author: LoggerHogger

While a variety of passenger trains and commute trains both arrived and departed from the Southern Pacific's 3rd & Townsend passenger terminal in San Francisco over the years of it's operation, it could not have carried all those passengers without the help of a small fleet of these hard working steam locomotives.

We see here SP #1157 as she works past the tower at 3rd & Townsend on August 11, 1939.  She is part of the S-8 Class of 0-6-0 switchers that SP had on it's roster for a number of years.  The SP had a total of 76 S-8 Class engines stationed all around the SP systems during the years they were in service.  Both Baldwin and ALCo supplied S-8 Class switchers to the SP between 1906 and 1911.

SP #1157 had been built by Baldwin in March 1907 and was only 38 years old when she was scrapped at the near-by Bayshore yards in October, 1946.  There is no telling how many passenger trains she shuffled about during her years at 3rd & Townsend.

Lightly chuffing in reverse, bell swinging, all eyes focused on the rearward move...
NICE.

Not sure, Wes.  It's a Vollrath photo.  Certainly could be.
