Maybe not Butch and Sundance, but the one Indiana Jones show was filmed in this same area with the circus train in the 70's. Also a house in Antonito was
used where Indiana and his dad lived.  My favorite of the IJ series, with the Nazi's as the bad guys per usual(first one too).

"The Race Track" on the straight track out of Antonito.  I shot a similar ground shot there in 2014, and one of my favorites due to the fast-running (for NG).
Nice clear day too.  Nice job Ian!

Next water tank west of Antonito was/is at Lava about 10 miles out.  It was normal for westbound freights of get water here.  The ruling grade west from Antonito to Ccumbres is 1.42% (or 75 feet per mile).  Back when the narrow gauge was a busy operation, they would go west with a maximum tonnage 70 car train.  The engines would be running just as hard as they do today climbing the 4% out of Chama.  They did this day and night, 12 months of the year.  I've known a few guys who worked for the Grande and recall firing a midtrain helper out of Antonito in the middle of a January night when the thermometer was registering 25 below zero.  Slugging away with the throttle wide open Johnson Bar down in the "beat her hard notch", injector running wide open.  All night, until dawn at Cumbres.  Then being cut out of the train at Cumbres and drifting light down the hill in the early morning light.....

Eairk, do you write fr a living? I can't get out of my mind the image you built of that mid train helper pumping her guts out in the middle of no where on a bitter cold night. Who wouldn't want to be there? But probably only for the one night. Thanks, too, to the original poster. Great video. d

GREAT video!

Stupid drone-related question: how do you manage to record sound from the airborne drone without the mic being dorwned out by the rotor noise?

Wow!  That's impressive history.  Wish I could have seen it!

The drone footage is shot silent.  There is no point of using the inbuilt mic as all it picks up is the sound of the rotors. For this clip, I also had two ground cameras running and the sound is a mix from these plus a third track of the ambient sound from the location.  I also have a library of sound recorded over the years that I can use if needed.

Well, in that case, excellent job on the sound mixing/editing!  Again, thanks for sharing this fantastic footage!
