Steam & Excursion > My all time favorite Art Burrill image (UP, Eaton, Colorado)Date: 01/16/19 12:01 My all time favorite Art Burrill image (UP, Eaton, Colorado) Author: tolland Art Burrill had 42 years with UP minus 4 for WW2 when he was chasing subs with the U.S. Navy in the Atlantic. Anyway, just prior to WW2, he spent some time as yard clerk in Eaton, Colorado. I have a number of his photos from that time, this one is my favorite. He carried around a folding Kodak Camera and took this picture of the streamlined UP Pacific class #2906 headed north with a double header.
Best, Jim Burrill Hamilton, Montana. Date: 01/16/19 12:05 Re: My all time favorite Art Burrill image (UP, Eaton, Colorado) Author: tolland You can see the Eaton Sugar factory in the distance at left. Eaton was also served by the Great Western Railroad which crossed the UP just north of the depot. Here's my second favorite Art Burrill image, Great Western #90 waits for permission to cross over the UP "Greeley Sub" mainline, late 1958.

I also liked another photo you posted a number of years back of (I believe) your uncle on the UP piledriver on the Fort Collins Branch. Thanks for sharing over the years Jim. They’ve got to be moving at a pretty good clip! That’s an impressive dust storm they’re creating! I worked for the GW in the early 1970's and now live in Eaton. Seeing the Streamlined UP and the Great Western 90 in Eaton is fantastic.

They went through a lot of work with that cantilever on single track to get that signal on the right side when the depot was in the way, you'd think they would simply have installed the signal location a bit north or south of there. It seems I have read somewhere that passenger trains on the DP were carded at 90 mph. === === = === JLH

And here is a picture of the crossing in December 1961 with the 90 waiting for a green to push a gon across. His picture of the streamlined pacific is wonderful.
