"A Tender Move" Ex-NY Central 6721, Utica, NY
Author: ut-1

Set loose by a teenaged trespasser on July 21, 2015, a covered hopper jumped a derail on the NYS&W and traveled three miles through the city of Utica, NY (including 3/5th mile of street-running on Schuyler St) before colliding with ex-NY Central No. 6721, a display locomotive at Utica's Union Station. No. 6721 and her tender crashed into Union Station but stopped the hopper, possibly preventing the collapse of the overhead walkway and saving lives/preventing injuries to Amtrak passengers waiting for a train on the other side of the station.

Yesterday, No. 6721 and her tender were moved. They will be repaired by Scott Symans of Dunkirk, NY. The tender will be trucked to Dunkirk for work while the locomotive will be repaired on-site.

After the runaway, the NYS&W severed the track into Union Station  so No. 6721 and tender were not on live rail. As CSX's main is adjacent to the dead NYS&W track, a CSX crew was present while the work took place.

Here's a video featuring highlights from yesterday (and a few photos):

Well done  . . with the interesting back story . . . nice contrast of CSX freight rolling by as power from a different era is being moved . . .

About how long did the operation take?
Saw former B&M caboose and NYC (in red) across the tracks.  Do they belong to the Adirondack Rwy?  Privately owned?

The contractor arrived about 8AM and I was present until roughly 11:45.

The B&M caboose is privately owned (it's for sale I believe). Not sure of the ownership of the ex-NYC caboose.

Where she belongs.  One of the very few survivors.  Nice work, John.
