Steam & Excursion > Bulgaria SteamDate: 02/09/19 04:13 Bulgaria Steam Author: andersonb109 May 2014 saw a trip to Bulgaria. The tour was organized by a private German group and run by the Bulgarian company Ulpa Tours. We had the use of three preserved locomotives. Here, 2-8-2 No. 01-23 built by Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works in 1935 is seen on the viaduct (nicknamed Gunter's Viaduct after the tour organizer who kept going back there each day) near the small town of Gluhar in the southern part of the country. Passenger cars were culled from the Corona Express train which apparently was used by previous governments for transport. Bulgaria is modernizing it's railways quickly with vast investment by the EU including modern rail cars so finding authentic locations for steam photos is becoming more difficult. The other two locomotives used were 4-6-2 No. 01-12, and 4-6-2 No. 01-05 Tomorrow we stay closer to home (for most of us) with Canada.
