Steam on Horseshoe Crv , 1976
Author: ns2557

Back on October 10 1976, CR let loose the ex RDG 4-8-4 2102 , now lettered for the Allegheny Co. on an excursion around Horseshoe Curve, west of Altoona Pa. Talked Dad into making the 2 hr trip to see this one. Here she is about midpoint on the curve wb with an SD35 helper. Lots of fans out for this one. Sounded good with the echo off the cliffs behind. Pretty sure I was there for this one.  Didn't the 2102 run solo from Pittsburgh and it was super foggy in the morning?
The trip we did had us chasing 6060 from Toronto to Gravenhurst the day before and driving overnight to Pittsburgh in dense fog during the wee hours of the morning.  It was a zoo around horseshoe curve and we didn't attempt it instead shooting just before the tunnel near the top.  Some guy came up along side the train in a dirt bike or car as I remember.  Long hours on a long weekend, as we headed back to SW Ohio.

Nice Photo.  I am so glad that this Reading 2102 is back on home rails being owned by the Reading & Northern R.R. and is in the process of being restored once again.

Greg, My memory aint what it used to be in regards to certain things, like the weather. Unless it was really stormy out, I didn't worry to much about it.

As for how it ran, That's another thing that remain in the cobwebs. I recall chasing another steam run back in this time frame with the 2102 and the ex CBQ 4060. That one had some issues that I recall. Do have some shots fromn that trip also. Thanks for the reply. Ben

You are probably thinking of the Cuyahoga Valley Line 4070, an ex-Grand Trunk Western 2-8-2.
