SP 18 out and about yesterday on the D&S
Author: jbwest

Yesterday was day two of the D&S' annual winter photographers weekend, and SP 18 pulled a short passenger train from Durango to Tall Timber and return.  The weather ranged from overcast to snow to sun, and from cold to really cold, a beautiful day for winter photography.  The line between Tall Timber and Cascade was blocked by an slide, which hopefully will be cleared by today.  The SP 18 is an oil burner on lease to the D&S until next summer from the Carson and Colorado museum at Independence, California., and is being used to familiarize D&S folks with oil burners while one of the D&S' own engines is being converted from coal to oil.  As usual the D&S put on a great show for the assembled photogs.

Thanks, John
Was the 18 a former Florence & Cripple Creek engine?
Maybe before the D&S returns it someone can put some (magnetic) lettering panels on it to resemble how it may have looked climbing up Phantom Canyon to Cripple Creek.
Put a box or gondola car or two behind it....
Daydreams are fun, eh?

No.  The SP 18 is the former Nevada-California-Oregon 12.  The F&CC engine was the SP 22.

Does the D&S make it in to Telluride CO.  Just wondering.

Nice photo and great to see the 18 stretching her legs.    Have any comments been heard/shared regarding how the 18 compares to the D&S's normal power?  Given the 18 wasn't built for this line, I have no idea what to expect from her there.

The plan is for 18 to pull a mixed train to Cascade tomorrow, but a winter storm is due in tonight and tomorrow will be interesting.

I don't know about that Chris.  The snow got plenty deep up on Montgomery Pass bakc in the day.
