Doubleheaded Ore Train-Steam of course!!!
Author: gregscholl

Leschede, Germany, located north of Rheine(Rine-ah) on the line to Emden and Nordiech Mole featured double train to Emden.
This train is a pair of 2-10-0's hauled loaded ore to the Ruhr Valley from the docks at Emden.  The first engine is a class 43, which is a three cylinder oil fired 2-10-0.  The second one appears to be a class 44, which is a coal-fired 3-cylinder.  We stayed in a little guest-house(Gasthaus) in this town with views from our second story window as trains roared by 24/7.  The line was also known for having the last stand of mainline pacifics with the 012 3 cylinder oil-fired engines.  I have post a few pics of them on the Europe board before.  The doubleheader shot here was made on my first trip to Europe in 1972.  Sunny days were a rarity in these parts!!!

I've always liked how the Germans painted parts of their steam frames red....

I've always wondered why their headlights are so small....?

They always seem to have excellent railbeds.....

And why no plows or "cow catchers" on the front of the engines???

Great photos!

I imagine its a safety thing with the red, so you can see it from the side,
or it is better for maintaining the engine....not 100% sure, but Germany had all their engines this way.

They are not headlights, but marker lights.  They don't need headlights there because most of the right of way is enclosed
with crossing gates, or rural crossings.  I rode the cab of a German Pacific at Night, and it was strangest thing, not being able to
see much ahead.

Yes its Germany.  Everything is tip-top, and clean.  When we were there in the 70's the DB was the biggest employer in the country.
They had crossing guards to lower manual gates when a train was coming, and so forth.  You could set your watch by passenger train times.

Enclosed right of way mostly....see above.
