Steam & Excursion > German Steam in regular service (part 4)Date: 02/17/19 13:51 German Steam in regular service (part 4) Author: Krokodil Some more pictures from the heavy pacifics BR01 on the famous 'Schiefe Ebene" between Neuemarkt-Wirsberg and Marktschorgast, a stiff 1:40 gradient in northeastern Bavaria. Heavier trains (more than five 4 wheel coaches) received pushers, by 1973 typcally a diesel. In the Christmas and Easter hoiday rush some trains were doubled headed. These trains typicallyhad a couplen of caches contiuing on to East Germany.
Picture 1: The 001 150 picks up speed as it departs Neiuenarkt-Wirsberg for Hof, soon the roaring exhaust will slow down into a steady staccato rythm on the grade. An unidenfied diesel is helpeing in the back Picture 2: Two pacifics working their way up the grade, the track follows the slope the mountain to reach the higher pateau of the Frankenwald. It is Christmas time and the train the second half is destined for East Germany, leading is an engine with a post-war rebuilt boiler. Picture 3: A pacific with rebuilt boiler is assisted by a diesel on the grade, still more that a mile to go on the grade. Date: 02/17/19 15:33 Re: German Steam in regular service (part 4) Author: gregscholl Nice series. In 1972 our hotel was to the left of where the front of the engine is in your shot. I have a movie taken from the room, and the left portion of the shot is coming under that same bridge in your shot.
The other shots look strangely familiar too. I assumed you hiked up or down the grade to get to those stone culverts and such. I remember doing so, but being tight to the hand rails. Was raining in a couple shots but so what, right! We saw small diesel pushers as well as 2-10-0's about 50% of the time. Even saw a couple local trains going up with 2-10-0's, but the Pacifics were the real attraction. Got a night cab ride from Hof back to N-M. What a place! You were lucky to get this in 1973, cause by 1974 it was all gone(no steam). Then the Rheine-Emden line had the last stand of 4-6-2's in Germany. I shot a lot of B&W in 1972 but have not scanned any. Your B&W posts make me want to dig them out someday!!! Love your composition on the grade!!! You were lucky to have some steam pushers by the early seventies, maybe the regular Neuenmarkt yard goat was out of commission. Steam disappeared fast. Thankfully, there was an Eisenbahnkurrier steam time table that listed pretty much all the steam powered trains, including freight. It also warned of impending changes. It was THE bible at that time!

It was THE bible at that time! > > Thomas Eckhardt We had only shed allocation info for the 72 trip, but we met some Germans and a Dutch Railfan who put us onto "Dampfgefurte Reiszug" Spelling ?, that listed all the passenger steam moves, and some freights. This told us about the simulateous departures from Lauda that was incredible. The other thing we found out about was "World Steam". This was published out of the UK by David Thornhill. The info was generally a couple of months old just because travelers would report after their trips, then it would be published and mailed to us in the states. The younger fans have it so easy today. On the other we got to see the real deal, but just had to work a bit harder than today's fans. On the grade you shot, we walked down from Marktschorgast each time. Rained one day!!!
